Canopies are structures that are designed to cover walkways, doors, sides of buildings etc. to protect us from adverse weather conditions or even to provide shade in the summer. They are often used to provide walkways between one building and another keeping us dry as we pass through. They can be roofed with various materials the cheapest versions being covered over in cloth or fabric but often these are not sturdy enough to cope with some of the weather conditions that can hit us so other, stronger materials were required such as plastic sheeting and for the ultimate protection sheet metal was used.

Using metal can have a few advantages over other materials, the main one being that once the structure is in place it will last for many years, cloth or fabric canopies need regular maintenance to stop them from leaking water and to prevent them from fading. Often with a metal canopy it can be painted over with weather resistant paint and look as god as new for several years.

Another great advantage of using metal is the strength, often with fabric canopies the rain can collect and they start to sag, the sagging increases as they begin to fill with water, metal canopies allow the water to run off them, these are often supplied with their own guttering as well, they are also stronger in windy conditions and require a lot of wind to even move them slightly.

The two main metals used are aluminium, excellent for being lightweight and keeping its strength or steel sheets that can be even stronger than aluminium. The canopy supports and frame are usually manufactured from strong steel tubing and if erected properly should stand the test of time.

Using metal can work out slightly more expensive than the fabric canopies but long term they will work out cheaper as they are more durable.
